The Met Gala, more formally known as the Institute Gala, is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute located in New York City. Every May, some of the most influential figures in fashion attend the Gala in support of the museum. Some of the most notable names to attend this year’s Gala were Virgil Abloh, The Migos, Rihanna, Kendall Jenner and Ariana Grande.
In the theme of costumes, the guests tend to wear some of the most trendy and fashionable pieces to impress the media and each other. This years theme was a play on Catholicism, titled: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Many of the women were spotted wearing white gowns and extravagant hats, similar to what one would see in the Vatican. Katy Perry was even seen on the red carpet wearing a set of five foot tall angel wings. A National Review article reports that Ariana Grande compared her garments to, “the back of the Sistine Chapel”. A Daily Mail article reported that some Christian groups were outraged at the display, and some even took to Twitter to display their rage, claiming that the theme would not have been done to any other religion because it would have been viewed as insensitive.
The men, however, didn’t follow the theme of Catholicism as much and went more towards a fashionable streetwear look. Virgil Abloh, Louis Vuitton’s newest head of design, wore a self-designed Louis Vuitton suit and an unreleased pair of Off-White Air Jordan 1’s. His all-white suit had Catholic murals running down from his neck to his waist, and he had gold around the collar of his undershirt. Most of the attention was drawn to his shoes, however, as they are a variation of the hottest sneaker of the year, the Off-White Jordan 1’s. Some of his similar shoes that released in the year prior have sold for as much as $2,500, and the pair he was wearing is expected to hold the same value. His wearing of the shoes put social media into a frenzy, with lots of speculation about a possible public release on the horizon.
